What are fillers?

Fillers are a type of cosmetic treatment that is often used to address the signs of aging. As we age, the skin begins to lose its elasticity and firmness, resulting in wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging. Fillers work by injecting a substance into the skin to restore volume and smooth out lines and wrinkles.

What does the treatment involve?

It is non-invasive, non-surgical and patients are usually allowed to continue their daily activities without any disruptions. The assigned dermatologist will carry the treatment out in under one hour.

Preparation can vary from one person to another but it is common for numbing cream or local anesthetic to be applied to the area that needs to be treated before injecting the dermal filler into the skin. Most patients report back minimal pain during the procedure.

What to expect post-treatment?

The recovery period post-treatment tends to be brief as the majority of patients can get back to their usual day to day activities within a couple of days. It is possible to experience a bit of swelling which is why the healthcare provider will advise you to avoid any kind of overly tiring activity for approximately 48 hours post-treatment. This is strongly suggested to help ensure the blood flow is not triggered as it can make the inflammation last for a longer period.

Ice can be used to help with any swelling that might occur. Patients are also advised to stop taking any medications or supplements that are capable of thinning out the blood before the treatment. If the individual needs to take it because for medical reasons then they need to discuss this further with the dermatologist.
